Retention of Fort Madison Holiday Parade Sought

(My ABC 5/WOI-TV) – FORT MADISON, Iowa (AP) — A petition with several hundred signatures has been sent to organizers of a new Fort Madison holiday program in an attempt to save the annual parade.

Petition organizer Mike Abel says he likes the idea behind the new Festival of Lights, but he and others want to keep the expanded festivities and retain the Parade of Lights. The parade on the day after Thanksgiving has been drawing people to Fort Madison for the past 22 years.

Organizers of the new Festival of Lights say abolishing the parade and moving the celebration to Riverview Park will expand attendance.

About 50 floats are expected to be located in the park on Nov. 29.

Abel says he’s hoping to hear back soon from Festival of Lights organizers.
