Trail system to receive improvements

The trail system in Ottumwa will received more improvements following action taken by the Ottumwa City Council this week.

The council approved a resolution awarding a contract for the 2014 South Loop Trail improvement project.

This project will complete the PCC trail from Gurley Avenue under highway 34 to the Rabbit Run Road.  The project will consists of three part.   The first project completes the south loop around John Deere.  It will connect the ends of the existing PCC trail starting near Gurley Avenue and under highway 34 then to the Rabbit Run Road.

Project two consists of connecting to the existing HMA trail by Herbergers and extending over to the Jimmy Jones shelter house area.  The third project will consists of installing rock on the lower cells of the West End Levee system starting at the ICE rail line on West Second Street to Forrest Avenue.

Jasper Construction Company of Newton, Iowa will conduct the work after submitting the best bid price of 160-thousand dollars.

Also during this week’s meeting, the council approved a resolution approving a contract, bond and certificate of insurance for the downtown Master Façade Improvement program.

This project will improve the facades of 15 buildings in the 300 block of east Main Street.  Christner Contracting was awarded the contract for a sum of more than 751-thousand dollars.
